The Gatineau police force is among a small but growing police contingent shifting their approach away from criminalization. The force supports a safe supply of drugs for people affected by dependant substance use. Decades of prohibition and enforcement (of drug laws) have proven disastrous and ineffective at curbing the importation of toxic drugs and skyrocketing overdose deaths. It is long past time for a new approach to drug policy grounded in public health principles, evidence, and compassion.
